From 27 August, anyone arriving at Radar, a music venue in Aarhus, is met by a sign reading “smart glasses? Nej tak”. The venue has banned the camera-equipped glasses sold by Meta and others, which critics in Denmark have nicknamed stalkerbriller. They now look close enough to ordinary glasses that a person can be filmed without noticing, and videos of women recorded without their consent have already circulated online.
Venue manager Martin Aagaard Jensen had set out his reasoning in an open letter in Kulturmonitor the day before. His concern is not only the audience but the volunteers, who should be able to do their jobs without wondering whether the conversation is being recorded. And further out: that the fear of being filmed will keep people at home. A concert hall is now deciding what a room has to feel like before anyone will walk into it.
