A Danish Municipality Has Told Teachers to Stop Using Their Own Phones for Work

Sønderborg Municipality has told the teaching staff at its state schools that private IT equipment may no longer be used for work. Teachers cannot photograph pupils on their own phones, write to parents through the Aula app or log work mileage on a private mobile. The municipality’s head of schools, Michael Jacobsen, says no new law lies behind it: it is a clarification of the duty to secure and document control over who accesses, stores, shares and deletes personal data.

No work phones came with the rule. Everything now has to be done on a work computer or a school phone, and parents have been told that replies may take longer. The local union chair, Nanna Stryhn-Johnsen, reports mixed reactions — some teachers are frustrated at losing a tool they used all day, others find it easier to put work down now that the line between the job and their own time is drawn for them.

So…:

What in your organisation quietly runs on people’s own equipment?
