Swedish Ambulance Crews Now See a Warning Triangle on the Patient Record

In Region Gävleborg, ambulance crews now get a warning triangle in the patient record when the person they are driving to has been violent before. Jessica Rosén, the region’s deputy head of emergency and ambulance services, says the symbol lights up and sits in the upper part of the record so staff see it immediately. The marking is meant to lower the risk of a crew walking into a situation they know nothing about.

The union Kommunal welcomes it and says it is not enough on its own. Its regional section chair, Linda Pettersson Lind, points out that a warning does not produce a police officer, and that when the police cannot spare anyone the answer is sometimes to send two ambulances instead — colleagues who are not trained to protect each other. The system arrives almost a year after an ambulance worker in Harmånger was killed by a patient who had been violent towards health staff before.

So…:

Which of the people you exist to help are you starting to put a mark on?
