Fanø Vesterland is a two-day music festival on the Danish island of Fanø, and its organisers have a problem they call enormous: people talk while the music plays. Many guests are islanders coming home with a great deal to tell each other, and the telling happens in front of the stages. Campaigns and appeals from the compères changed nothing.
So last year the festival built a talk tent — a greenhouse where guests may talk as much as they like. It worked well enough that this year, on 4 and 5 September, three of them stood on the site, along with larger areas where no music is played at all. Founder and director Jesper Møller does not frame it as a ban but as a place: there is somewhere you are allowed to sit and talk.
So…:
Where could you make room for the behaviour you keep asking people to stop?
