Virgin Active, a chain with 224 clubs across nine countries, is repositioning the gym as a “social wellness club.” Its Mayfair site in London fully reopens in July as the concept’s first UK home, after launches in Milan, Cape Town, Sydney and Doha. Inside: six studios, a contrast spa with sauna, infrared and cold plunge, heated hydromassage beds — plus a co-working lounge, meeting rooms, phone booths and a café. It is pitched as a “second space” where training, recovery, work and connection sit together.
What stands out is the mainstreaming. The sober, wellness-first social club — recovery and connection in place of a night out — has moved from boutique studios to a global chain rolling it out at scale. When a mass operator rebuilds its core product around belonging rather than just exercise, the niche has become the norm. The signal: “where you work out” is being redrawn as “where you spend your downtime.”
So…:
How could you turn your everyday service into a place people choose to spend their free time?
