On Mount Titlis, 3,020 metres above sea level, the architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron has reopened a 1980s telecommunications tower as a visitor destination. Rather than demolish the steel structure, the architects kept its frame and pushed two glass-and-steel volumes through it. Opened in June 2026, the 56-metre TITLIS Tower holds the Horizon Deck with 360-degree glacier views, Joseph’s Restaurant and a Rolex boutique — operated by Bucherer and billed as the highest in the world.
What is interesting is the reuse. A piece of obsolete signal infrastructure becomes architecture, hospitality and luxury retail in one move, and a functional mast is reframed as a reason to make the journey. The mountain itself is no longer the only attraction.
