Small talk — the everyday, low-stakes chatter that oils human contact — is increasingly something adults pay to learn. Online platforms now list well over a hundred social-skills and small-talk courses, with Udemy, Coursera and others teaching how to start a conversation, keep it flowing and read the other person. A skill once absorbed simply by being around people is now packaged into lessons.
The rise says something about the moment. As more of daily life moves to screens, the ordinary muscles of face-to-face contact get less exercise — and start to feel like something you have to relearn. The more digital we get, the more people quietly crave, and will pay for, help being human in a room with others.
