On 17 August the British pub chain Wetherspoon asked its customers to put their phones on silent. The rule covers all 792 pubs and applies to phones, tablets and any other device: no music or video played out loud, and no calls on speakerphone. Signs are going up asking guests to use earphones instead.
The chain has never played music in its own pubs — only the 44 branches trading as Lloyds do — and it says noise from other people’s devices has become a growing problem. Staff are told to use common sense; a manager can ask someone to stop, and to leave if they refuse. A YouGov survey last year found 79 per cent of Britons are bothered by other people’s phone speakers.
So…:
Where in your own offer is quiet the thing people actually pay for?
