Lululemon Apologised for a Drum at Its Great Wall Yoga Event

Lululemon has apologised after a yoga festival on the Great Wall of China — staged on 30 May 2026 to celebrate Chinese culture and wellness — drew criticism for a drum many viewers said looked Japanese rather than Chinese. A percussionist flagged the instrument on Weibo; the company said that ‘due to limitations in our professional knowledge’ it had not spotted the issue, and it scrubbed the event from its website and social media. The drum troupe apologised too.

The activewear brand wanted a moment of national pride on one of China’s great symbols. A single detail turned it into a controversy. The lesson is less about sensitivity than about process: large activations carry a gap between what looks right on a brief and what is right in context.

So…: Where in your own launches could a quick context-check catch what enthusiasm misses?
