Tennessee Moved to Rename Nashville’s Airport Three Days After Dolly Parton Died

Dolly Parton died in Nashville on 25 August 2026, 80 years old. Three days later, on 28 August, Tennessee governor Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport announced their intent to name the airport in her honour. The proposal did not begin in a committee. A petition to rename the airport, started in January 2025 by two Nashville residents, Lydia Popovich and Dan Dion, had passed 170,000 signatures in the days after her death.

The governor’s office says it spoke with Parton’s team during the week, and that they are touched by the idea and open to continuing the conversation. The decision itself is not the governor’s. It belongs to the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, which takes up its naming policy and the proposal at its meeting on 17 September. The signatures renamed nothing. They set the clock everyone else is now working to.

So…:

When the people you serve have already decided, how fast can your own process move?
