Deutsche Bahn is banning the drinking of alcohol at every one of its stations. The rule applies across Germany and is being introduced in stages at 5,400 stations by 15 October. Around 30 stations are already alcohol-free, among them Cologne, Munich and Hamburg, and on 1 September Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin Gesundbrunnen, Kiel and Braunschweig follow.
The reason given is the safety of staff and travellers: where too much alcohol flows, says chief executive Evelyn Palla, violence rises. Bars and restaurants at the stations are exempt, and passengers may still carry sealed alcohol in their luggage. Anyone drinking is told to leave, and repeat offences bring a ban from the premises. The station stops being an open public space and becomes a building with house rules.
