On 19 August, Næstved Gymnasium og HF launched what it calls the first upper-secondary study line in Denmark built around emergency preparedness. It was designed with Beredskabsstyrelsen, the national emergency management agency, and carries biology at A level with chemistry and physical education at B. The practical half runs at Beredskabsstyrelsen Sjælland: fire, first aid, crisis handling, orange helmets and yellow safety boots instead of laptops.
One of the students who chose it says the appeal was doing biology, physics and chemistry with her hands. The head of Beredskabsstyrelsen Sjælland frames it from the other side: the collaboration gives the agency contact with young people. Preparedness has moved from a leaflet in the letterbox to a timetable, with grades attached.
So…:
What do you keep telling people to be ready for without ever teaching them how?
