An Odense School Bought Notebooks and Whiteboards for Every Student

Mulernes Legatskole in Odense has bought a paper exercise book for every new first-year student and a small handheld whiteboard for every student in the school. The books are for taking notes by hand; the boards are for answering a question and holding the answer up. The whole intake was then taught how to take handwritten notes — a skill the school could no longer assume anyone had.

Headmaster Henrik Vestergaard Stokholm says writing by hand brings a different kind of calm, and he is not arguing that computers are useless. The point is what the room feels like: more quiet, more presence, fewer clicking keyboards. Danish schools spent years moving everything onto screens. This one has bought stationery on purpose, and it is buying the attention back one exercise book at a time.
