Flights and ships have been followable on a live map for years. Trains have not. On 26 August a French one-person company launched TrainTracker24, where trains appear as small coloured arrows moving across France, Spain and Belgium, refreshed every 20 seconds. Eurostar and Italy’s Frecciarossa are included, alongside counts of how many trains are running, the average delay, the share on time and the share cancelled.
The data is not new. It comes from the open feeds that operators, regions and infrastructure managers already publish. What is new is that someone assembled it into a picture a passenger can read. Founder Elric Battello puts it plainly: at the airport you open Flightradar24; at the station you get a display and a notification, and you still do not know what is going on.
