Design Overtook Retail as the Biggest Contributor to the UK Economy

The Design Council publishes its Design Economy study every three years, and the 2026 edition puts a number on something that happened quietly. Design contributed £136.7 billion in gross value added to the UK economy. That is 5.5 per cent of the total, or roughly one pound in every twenty, and more than the £114 billion of the retail sector. Since 2019 the design figure has grown by 40 per cent, while the economy as a whole grew by 24.

The more telling number sits underneath. Eight in ten of the 2.27 million people the report counts as designers do not work in a design company at all. They sit in manufacturing, healthcare, engineering and finance, and account for £90.6 billion of the total. Design has stopped being a sector you can point at and has become something that happens inside all the others.

So…:

Where in your organisation is design already happening without being called that?
