The truck maker Scania told its staff in June that the option to work from home would end. From 10 August, everyone in research and development at Södertälje has to be in the office five days a week. The arrangement being withdrawn had been in place for six years. Management did not argue from productivity or output: it said the world outside is changing fast and is marked by uncertainty, and that this calls for stronger collaboration, learning and problem-solving inside the groups people work in.
The academics’ association at Scania, which has more than 3,500 members on site, does not think a general return is the right answer. Its chair Christina Widén points to the practical side — offices never laid out for everyone at once, commuting, parking. The notable part is the reasoning: presence is asked for as an answer to an unpredictable world, not as a way of keeping an eye on anyone.
So…:
Which of your own decisions would you defend with uncertainty rather than with numbers?
