The consultancy Adaptavist asked 2,500 knowledge workers in the UK, the US, Canada, Germany and Spain about artificial intelligence at work. Most of the headline numbers are positive: 73 per cent say AI makes them more efficient, and 67 per cent want their organisation to use more of it. Further down the same report, 65 per cent say they regularly feel nostalgic for how work ran before AI, and 38 per cent would remove generative AI from the world if they could.
Adaptavist puts a name to what sits underneath. It calls it the verification tax: the hidden work of checking, correcting and signing off what the machine produced. Fifty-two per cent regularly correct AI-generated work from colleagues, and 26 per cent feel new pressure to keep pace with the tool. Nostalgia usually needs decades. This is nostalgia for a way of working that was still normal three years ago, reported by the same people who say the tools make them faster.
