Carrier Pidge is an iOS messenger that developer Noah Iarrobino built in about three weeks. He calls it pointless and says it has genuinely no practical use. It went viral anyway. Every message is carried by a virtual pigeon flying at 110 mph, and the delivery time is calculated from the real GPS distance between the two users. A message across town arrives in seconds. Los Angeles to New York takes around 22 hours. Anything crossing an ocean takes days.
The app commits to the bird all the way. Contacts are your flock, conversations sit in an aviary, and a live map shows the pigeon on its way. Each bird also carries a 0.2 per cent chance of dying en route, and then the message is simply gone. A second app with the same premise, Roost, launched a few months earlier.
