On 21 January 2026 Sony unveiled the LinkBuds Clip: open earbuds that clip onto the outer ear instead of sealing the canal, so wearers hear their music and their surroundings at once. Priced at $230, they use a C-shaped design, a bone-conduction sensor for calls and ship in plastic-free packaging. Sony is joining a fast-growing category of ‘open’ audio.
What stands out is the reversal of the promise. For a decade premium earbuds sold isolation — noise cancelling as the point, the world shut out. Open-ear designs sell the opposite: staying aware, present, reachable. After years of sealing ourselves off, the new status feature is not tuning the world out but letting it back in.
So…:
Where have you been selling people isolation — when what they now want is to stay connected to what’s around them?
