United has unveiled the Relax Row: a row of three economy seats that converts into a flat, couch-like bed once the plane is in the air. Adjustable leg rests fold up to close the gaps between seats, and it comes with a mattress pad, an extra blanket and pillows; kids even get a plush toy and a travel kit. It rolls out on the airline’s long-haul 787s and 777s from 2027, and it’s priced to sit below business class — lie-flat comfort sold as an upgrade inside economy rather than as a separate cabin.
Watch the direction of travel. The flat bed was the defining privilege of business and first class — the one thing money bought that economy never could. Now it’s being unbundled and sold by the row to everyone else. It’s a familiar pattern: a premium experience slowly becomes a mainstream option, available à la carte. The luxury doesn’t vanish; it trickles down, gets cheaper, and quietly resets what “basic” is allowed to include.
So…:
Which premium experience in your industry is ready to be unbundled and sold to the mainstream?
