“Becoming Chinese” Turns Everyday Chinese Habits Into Wellness on TikTok

A trend called “Becoming Chinese” has gone viral on TikTok: people around the world are adopting everyday habits rooted in traditional Chinese wisdom. It means drinking hot water and TCM teas rather than cold drinks, eating congee, wearing house slippers indoors and practising qigong and Ba Duan Jin. A video by American creator Sherry Zhu on 5 January passed 2.7 million views.

What looks like a light lifestyle game — part parody, part cultural curiosity — points to a deeper need: small, repeated rituals that make daily life calmer and more physical in an unpredictable time. The habits are cheap, physical and easy to share, and tap the same current as cold plunges and breathwork: managing yourself when the world feels unmanageable.

So…:

What small, calming ritual could you offer your customers in the middle of a busy day?
