The Danish government wants to ban social media for children under 15

The Danish government plans to introduce a 15-year age limit for using several social media platforms. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) announced the plan in her opening speech to Parliament, noting that parents may still give consent from the age of 13. Frederiksen said social media “steal our children’s childhood,” but did not specify which platforms would be affected.

Most social networks currently require users to be at least 13 years old. Still, 94 percent of Danish seventh graders have had a profile before turning 13, according to Børns Vilkår.

Digitalisation Minister Caroline Stage (M) calls a national age limit a “breakthrough” and supports setting it at 15, but the proposal is not yet part of the government’s legislative agenda.
