Japan’s iconic Mt. Fuji, standing at 3,776 meters, has been obscured by a barrier to curb the influx of tourists at a popular photo spot. The town of Fujikawaguchiko installed a 20-meter by 2.5-meter fence to prevent visitors from stopping dangerously on a busy road.
Locals were overwhelmed by tourists who littered and disregarded traffic rules, posing a hazard. “I’m happy foreigners visit, but it can be dangerous,” said resident Kikue Katsumata. The yen’s low value and post-pandemic travel surge have driven record tourist numbers, prompting towns like Osaka and Hakone to consider tourism taxes.
