WWF’s Calendar Marks Countdown to Species Extinction

In an unprecedented move, WWF has mobilized top researchers to forecast the extinction dates of the world’s most endangered species, spotlighting the Sumatran rhino and Eastern gorilla among others facing imminent extinction. This initiative, part of an effort to make the complex issue of mass extinction tangible, reveals a grim future with the Sumatran rhino potentially disappearing by 2035 and the Eastern gorilla by 2070. The Living Planet Report 2022 underscores the urgency, noting a staggering 69% decline in global wildlife populations over five decades, with around one million species at risk of extinction due to habitat destruction and human conflict.

WWF’s innovative approach includes the creation of an “Extinction Days” Google calendar to remind the public of these critical timelines, hoping to inspire action to avert these projections. This educational tool is part of WWF’s broader mission to protect wildlife by addressing habitat destruction, illegal trade, and urging for political action. The campaign emphasizes the interconnectedness of all life, advocating for the preservation of iconic and lesser-known species alike to maintain biodiversity.

WWF continues to fight for wildlife conservation, habitat protection, and against the illegal wildlife trade. With the current pace of species loss mirroring the sixth mass extinction, the foundation’s efforts highlight the need for immediate action to protect our planet’s diverse inhabitants.
