Airbnb has established the Airbnb Housing Council, aimed at addressing housing affordability in the U.S. The Council, led by ex-Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, includes housing experts, officials, and academics. Its goal is to guide Airbnb in developing policies that balance home sharing benefits with community needs.
The initiative reflects Airbnb’s commitment to community support, especially as hosting helps 40% of Airbnb hosts stay in their homes. Airbnb, which began during the Great Recession to help its founders with rent, now facilitates about 1 million U.S. stays nightly.
The Council will explore innovative policies and partnerships to increase long-term housing supply and align short-term rental regulations with housing affordability challenges. It builds on Airbnb’s prior efforts, such as a $3 million donation to the San Francisco Foundation and housing initiatives in Colorado.
Comprising U.S. housing advocates and officials, the Council is a step in Airbnb’s continued dedication to responsible community partnership and tackling the longstanding housing affordability issue.
