Facial Recognition to Be Used at Silverstone Again

Facial recognition will be used by Northamptonshire Police at the British Grand Prix for the second year to prevent criminal activity. The event, expected to host about 480,000 people from 4-7 July, first saw this technology in 2023. Cameras will scan faces to match biometrics against a watch list.

Det Supt Richard Tompkins emphasized the technology’s role in maintaining safety and deterring criminals. Manual checks, including fingerprints, will ensure accuracy. Despite previous concerns about bias and legality, Tompkins likened the technology to CCTV, stressing its importance in keeping the public safe.
