GM ends hydrogen fuel cell development for passenger vehicles

General Motors has announced it will end its work on hydrogen fuel cell systems for consumer vehicles under the HYDROTEC brand. The company will now focus on batteries, charging infrastructure, and electric drivetrains.

The existing joint venture with Honda will continue, but only for non-automotive applications such as data centers and backup power. GM cited high costs and limited infrastructure as the main barriers to scaling hydrogen for cars.
